Las Damas Ranch
Las Damas Ranch
Las Damas Ranch is a unique ecosystem that aims to restore and preserve diverse grasslands. By mimicking the natural migration patterns of bison and antelope, the ranch promotes animal impact combined with rest periods to enhance biodiversity. Through regenerative ranching principles, the ranch works in harmony with nature to improve soil health and create a resilient and vibrant landscape.
A Rich History
Founded in the early 1800s, Las Damas Ranch initially served as a support system for mining operations in the region. It provided essential resources such as meat, leather, mules, and donkeys to sustain the mining industry. The ranch derived its name, "Las Damas," meaning "The Ladies," from the female saint names given to the mines situated within its boundaries. The ranch's history was not without challenges as it coexisted with the Chiricahua Apaches. Numerous battles were fought between miners, ranchers, and the Apacheria in the region. One notable battle occurred at Tres Castillos, located 10 miles north of Las Damas, where the legendary Apache warrior Victorio was defeated by the Mexican army.
A Passion for the Desert
Alejandro Carrillo, a fourth-generation rancher, has deep roots in northern Mexico. His affinity for the Chihuahuan desert began at an early age, influenced by his love for Western movies and hunting adventures with his father. Spending summers at desert cattle ranches and participating in roundups shaped Alejandro's understanding of the challenges faced by cattle ranchers in arid grasslands. After a successful career in the software industry, Alejandro returned to the ranch in 2004 to assist his father with the cattle operation. Recognizing the limitations of conventional methods, he sought a different approach. Fortuitously, Alejandro connected with practitioners of Holistic Management, who became his mentors on his regenerative journey. His first Holistic Management training in 2006, led by Jesus Almeida, Elco Blanco, and Octavio Bermudez, marked the beginning of his transformative path.
A Regenerative Journey
Alejandro and his group of forward-thinking ranchers embarked on a continuous learning process, traveling across countries and continents to study regenerative practices from the best grazers worldwide. Through experimentation and perseverance, Alejandro's ranch has become a global reference for demonstrating the potential of working in harmony with nature in arid, low-precipitation environments. The results speak for themselves. Water infiltration rates have improved, rainfall has increased, plant diversity has flourished, wildlife populations have thrived, and soil temperature fluctuations have been moderated. Biomass has increased, livestock numbers have grown, inputs have decreased, and the ranch's overall profitability has improved. Alejandro has successfully built a resilient and sustainable operation.
Conclusion
Las Damas Ranch stands as a testament to the power of regenerative practices in arid grasslands. Alejandro Carrillo's dedication to working in harmony with nature has transformed his family's ranch into a thriving ecosystem. The ranch serves as an inspiration for others, showcasing the potential for sustainable and profitable livestock operations even in challenging environments.
